Hockey, on a Mac

Hockey video analysis software for Mac.

Pelaa video analysis is a Mac app for hockey coaches. I built it after five seasons as a video coach in the KHL, because the tools I needed were built and priced for big organisations. You tag the game, stack the clips, draw on a stop frame and export the video. It costs €19.99 a month and the trial is 14 days with no card.

A coach with game video and a Mac.

The coach who cuts the clips

You film or receive the game, cut it after, and build the next video session. You pay for the tools yourself or out of a small budget. That is who I priced it for.

Youth, junior and pro staff

One window and one workflow whatever the level. If a whole staff needs it, see Pelaa for teams & clubs.

From the final whistle to a finished clip.

Open the video

Press Cmd+L, or drag the file onto the window. MP4, MOV, M4V, MTS and M2TS open. Periods or camera angles can sit in one project with one playhead and no seam.

Tag in the tag window

Click the plus sign: the app ships with a hockey tag window, or start a new template and add your own buttons. Switch from Build mode to Tag mode (Cmd+Shift+B) and press a button or its key. Each tag lands on the Track.

Work the Track

The Track is a multi-row timeline, one row per category. Click a tag, Cmd-click for several, or click a row name to take the whole row. Search by label, trim the edges. The Analytics button builds a report of counts or time, and a click on a number lights up those tags.

Stack the clips

Select tags and press Equal sign. They go to the Stack, where you re-trim with Cmd+I and Cmd+O and drag clips into order. Re-cutting a clip never touches its tag.

Draw on a stop frame

Press Closing bracket for a stop frame, then draw with arrows, circles, spotlight, highlight or text. The drawing stays and is burned into the export. Cmd+Shift+Closing bracket adds a title card so a meeting has sections.

Show it or send it

Cmd+Shift+F starts Presentation, full screen, on a second display if you have one. Cmd+E exports H.264 MP4: one video, one per row, or individual clips.

Going deeper: building a video session for your players, cutting one player's shifts and talking over them, and tagging a game live while it records.

Three short tutorials follow one game.
