Live tagging

Tag a hockey game live while it records.

Connect a camera, a capture box or a stream link to your Mac, press record, and tag the game while it happens. Scrub back for an instant replay while the recording keeps rolling. I tagged games live for five KHL seasons as a video coach, and this is the part of that job I built Pelaa video analysis to do on a Mac.

A Mac, a source and a tag window.

A camera or a capture box

Anything that gives macOS a video source. A camera works, and so does an HDMI capture box feeding a camera signal into the Mac. Recording > Start Live Capture (Cmd+Option+R) opens the source picker. It lists what macOS sees, so I do not publish a list of supported boxes. Test yours in the trial.

Or a stream link

Paste an HLS link (the .m3u8 kind) into the same picker. Pelaa plays it live and writes it to disk beside your project. A dropped stream reconnects on its own. Honest note: stream recordings are video-only. You hear the stream live, but the saved footage is silent. That is a macOS limit.

Your tag window, loaded first

Open the tag window you will use before you start. It carries into the capture already in Tag mode, so the first press of a button lands a tag. Build your own, or use the hockey tag window that ships with the app.

Record and tag in one window.

Press record and tag

In the picker you choose the audio input (a microphone, or the feed's own sound) and a quality tier. Only tiers your source delivers are offered. A new project asks for a name and location first. Then tag as it happens: the Track fills in real time, one row per category.

Instant replay without stopping

Any seek steps you off the live edge into review while the recording continues. Press Cmd+Option+L, or click the LIVE pill, to jump back to now. Pause is Cmd+Option+P. Stopping asks you to confirm, and what was captured is already saved.

Reports while the game runs

Open the report builder from the Analytics button in the Track edit bar and the counts and times update as you tag. Click a cell and its tags light up on the Track. Every number stays a door back to the video.

Periods in one game

Stop at the intermission, then press Record again in the same project. The next period joins the same game, and the timer, Track and tags count game time from the first period. While a period records you can scrub, play and tag earlier ones.

The tags are already clips waiting to be cut.

Stop the recording and you are looking at the normal breakdown screen. The video is in the project bundle, the tags are on the Track. Select the ones you want and press Equal sign to send them to the Stack, then trim, draw on stop frames and export clips as H.264 MP4. Continue with the full after-game workflow, or build a video session for your players.

What to know before game night.

One capture runs at a time across the app. Closing the window or quitting mid-game asks first and finishes the file. If Pelaa closes during a recording, the next launch finds the saved video and offers to add it. I have not tested a live capture and a screen recording together, so do not plan on both at once. Whether each camera, capture box or stream holds up across a full game is something only a real test settles. Run yours on a practice first, and tell me what gets in the way. That part I can fix.

Disk space: recording takes about 1.1 GB an hour at 720p30, 1.6 at 720p60, 1.8 at 1080p30 and 2.7 at 1080p60. Check free space before you leave for the rink.

Questions about live tagging.

What can I plug into my Mac to record a game?

A camera, or a capture box that feeds a camera signal into the Mac. The source picker lists whatever macOS sees. I do not publish a list of supported capture boxes, because the picker is the test. You can also paste a live stream link (HLS, the .m3u8 kind) into the same picker.

How much delay is there between the camera and the screen?

I do not quote a delay figure, because it depends on your camera and capture box. Test yours in the trial before a real game.

Can two people tag the same game?

No. A project lives on one Mac and has no shared or multi-user editing, so one person tags. Tags and projects can be exported and imported afterwards.

What does it cost?

Pelaa video analysis is €19.99 per month, €199 per year, or €399 once for the Founding Lifetime plan (first 20 customers only). The trial is 14 days, full app, no card. Recording uses disk space: about 1.1 GB an hour at 720p30 up to about 2.7 GB an hour at 1080p60.

How do the tags become clips after the game?

They are already on the Track when you stop. Select them and send them to the Stack, then trim, draw on stop frames and export. Nothing is imported or synced first.
