Record a voice-over breakdown of a game

Record your voice while you scrub, pause and draw on the video. Pelaa saves the whole session, drawings and voice-over, as one MP4 on your Mac.

The steps

Open the game and get to the moment

Open your project or drop a game video into Pelaa. Use the Track or the Stack to line up the clips you want to talk through, or simply play the whole game.

Pick the microphone and camera

Recording > Microphone lists the inputs your Mac can see. Recording > Include Camera (Cmd+Shift+V) adds a camera bubble of your face, and Recording > Camera picks which camera. Drag the bubble where you like and resize it. Pelaa remembers the place.

Start recording

Choose Recording > Start Recording, or press Cmd+Shift+R. Pelaa switches the window to the player and drawing tools, then counts down 3, 2, 1 while the screen, microphone and camera warm up. Nothing is saved during the countdown, and Esc cancels it.

Scrub, pause, draw and talk

Play, pause and scrub the video the way you always do, and talk. Pause on the moment that matters and draw on it: freehand, line, arrow, circle, highlight or text, keys 1 to 6. Your cursor is in the recording too, so you can point at a player without drawing anything.

Pause the take or throw it away

Cmd+Shift+P pauses the recording and resumes it, so you can set up the next clip without it ending up in the file. Cmd+Shift+Delete discards the take after you confirm. The same controls sit in the menu bar while you record.

Stop and find the file

Press Cmd+Shift+R again or Esc to stop. Finder opens with the new file selected. It is one H.264 MP4 with your voice as AAC audio, in Movies / Pelaa, named for the day. Recording > Reveal Last Recording in Finder finds it again later.

What to know before you record.
